Lessons to hold on to when the people you love leave.

Updated: Oct 25, 2020

After Goodbye.

My best friend as well as my cousin both went back to university yesterday. After 6 months together, 2/5 of our little group were gone.

It entailed a lot of crying, but somehow this period after seems to be as much of a struggle as saying goodbye.

I found myself searching on google, ”How to not be sad when someone leaves”. After not finding much, I thought I would write my own article for that very feeling.

If you’re in a similar position, a friend or family has left, or if you’re the one leaving, read on to take in some lessons to hold on to during this time.

1. Goodbye is never forever.

Whether it is in 2 weeks, 2 months or 2 years- you will see them again. And that reunion after time apart will be so much sweeter. Hold on to the remembrance that time apart is never forever.

2. You now have the perfect time to grow and develop yourself as an individual.

Perhaps while that person was here you spent a lot of time in their company, you did things together. Now is the time for you to enjoy your company. You have the time to work on yourself as an individual, become more independant and do the things that you love, for you.

3. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Even though it hurts to be apart from people you love, the distance does sometimes bring you closer. Your love for them will increase over time, and when you do spend time together once again- you’ll cherish every moment.

4. Embrace change, don’t dwell and remain stagnant.

In life there will always be change. Times will never stay the same and things will always be changing. No matter how much you wish for time to stay still, it will not. So you cannot try to remain stagnant because in doing that you will become stuck. Don’t dwell on what you wish could be, embrace what is and be like a free spirit- go with the flow. Accept the way things are and you’re halfway there to enjoying the change.
