The Psychology of Love

5 interesting things that happen when you fall in love.

1. Addiction to the person you love and the experience of withdrawal symptoms.

Falling in love causes the brain to start releasing particular hormones. These include oxytocin, adrenaline, vasopressin and dopamine. The response from your neural receptors causes you to experience a sense of euphoria and purpose. So in a sense you become addicted.

However the body also releases corticoliberin when separated from the person you love which causes you to feel anxious and low. This is the bodies response to the 'addiction'.

2. You will experience bodily changes.

As a result of the stimulation particular hormones symptoms such as red and flushed face, increasing heart rate, sweaty palm and the sensation of 'butterflies' can be experienced. The first three are a result of adrenaline and norepinephrine, whereas butterflies is caused due to the release of the stress hormone cortisol which can cause nerves and that sensation.

3. A whole language is produced.

Pheromones are like 'smell chemicals' that we all release. These cause you to be perceived as more attractive to the opposite gender as they are picked up by the hypothalamus (which regulates hormones). The release of pheromones explains why the scent of the person you love might make you so happy.

4. Watch as your anxiety falters.

Through physical contact the sensation of love releases oxytocin. This is known as the 'love' hormone'. The result of the release of this hormone causes a decrease in anxiety and an increase in confidence, your inhibitions are also lowered.

5. Your love can ease chronic pain.

The intense sensation of love has been found to activate the same areas of the brain that painkillers will activate. In addition to this, research has found that being in the same room as the person you love can reduce acute pain and holding their hand can reduce the effect of painful stimuli.
